Saint Hyginus was the Pope of Rome from c. 138 to c. 142. He is said to have been a Greek by birth and a philosopher by profession before his conversion to Christianity. Little is known of his pontificate, but it is believed that he may have been martyred during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. He is venerated as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church.
