Saint of the Day for 1/11 - St. Hyginus

Saint Hyginus was the Pope of Rome from c. 138 to c. 142. He is venerated as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church.

Who Was St. Hyginus?

He is said to have been a Greek by birth and a philosopher by profession before his conversion to Christianity. Little else is known of his pontificate, but it is believed that he was martyred during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. Even in the little that survives of his story, a converted philosopher seated as the Vicar of Christ stands as a witness that reason and revelation are not enemies — a good saint to call on whenever the faith is mocked as unreasonable.

Dear Saint Hyginus, we pray to you for guidance and strength. May your wisdom and courage guide us in our daily lives. Help us to stay true to our faith and to live a life that is pleasing to God. We ask for your intercession in all our needs and that through your example we may grow in holiness and love. Amen.
